The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa state has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to create ‘Polytechnics Commission’ that would employ and regulate the policies governing the academic institutions across the nation.

ASUP posited that Polytechnics are giving skills to it’s products not only certificates.

The Chairman of ASUP, Federal Polytechnic Mubi Chapter,TPL Comrade Kadala Solomon Bandi made the appeal during a press conference shortly after leading a protest match within the campus.

Kadala who was flanked by members of his executive said “because of the apparent danger faced by the Polytechnic sector as well as the ploy to continue undermining the sector and it’s products by some forces, you may all be aware of the recent development in the sector occasioned by the release of a purported document titled ‘Schemes of Service for Polytechnics’ by the national Board for Technical Education (NBTE)’

The unionist who was furious noted that the release of what he called obnoxious Scheme of Service has raised the ASUP fears and concern for the sector and in particular, the products and therefore, the Union cannot afford to fold it’s hands and watch the subsector being destroyed.

According to Kadala, the Union was invited for the revision of the Scheme of Service along with other critical stakeholders and inputs were documented ,but to ASUP’s surprise, what came out was grossly altered with provoking negative inputs.

“We wouldn’t know if such distortions and other strange insertions in the Scheme of Service came from the NBTE or the office of the Head of Service of the Federation”.

Kadala on behalf of the Executive therefore submitted that; the Chapter is in full support and in total solidarity with CNO’s and NEC’s resolutions on the Scheme of Service documents, that when a legal and tangible or new policy is made,a monetorium period of reasonable period be given before the implementation of such policies and that the Polytechnic sector is already a skill oriented sector as such, the NSQ Skil cannot and should not be used as a criteria for promotion to any level and therefore,it should be removed completely.

He emphasized that the purported ‘Scheme of Service document’ has been rejected in it’s totality since it has been proven to be a “document without content’.

The protest which attracted large members of ASUP was climaxed by handing over the union’s position to the Governing Council for onward delivery to the Minister of Education.
