Deputy House Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu has criticized the under-representation of women, youth, and marginalized groups in parliamentary decisions.
Kalu stated this during the unveiling of the Parliamentary Development Programme, citing challenges in parliamentary functioning and reforms.
“Parliaments face challenges, including limited capacities, lack of inclusivity, and disconnects between laws and national development plans,” Kalu said.
He urged synergy among government agencies, transparency, and capacity building for budget oversight, particularly gender-responsive budgeting.
The programme aims to address Nigeria’s development challenges, including multidimensional poverty affecting 133 million Nigerians.
The Deputy Speaker emphasized local ownership, empowering lawmakers to set priorities, and aligning reforms with global standards.
“Regular stakeholder engagement is crucial to discuss the needs of the people and boost confidence in the parliament,” Kalu added.
Development partners, including UNDP, USAID, African Development Bank, and Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, attended the event.
