Former Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has called on African leaders to strengthen people-centred governance by addressing economic hardship, tackling corruption and restoring public confidence in democratic institutions.

Osinbajo made the call while delivering a lecture titled: Democracy and Development: The Imperative of People-Centred Governance, during activities marking the fifty-ninth birthday of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, at the Government House, Yola.

Professor Osinbajo commended Governor Fintiri for investimg in security, healthcare, education and social welfare, noting that such initiatives demonstrate how politics can contribute to improving people’s lives.

Professor Osinbajo who said many Africans prefer democracy rule, noted that, very fewer are satisfied with its performance, expressing concern that public confidence in government institutions remains anxious, while economic hardship, unemployment, inadequate living conditions and inequality continue to undermine citizens’ expectations.

In an appreciation remark Governor Fintiri says birthdays should be moments of gratitude to God and sober reflection on personal achievements and contributions to society, rather than occasions for personal glorification.

While explaining that his years of experience as a husband, father, businessman and politician had provided him with opportunities to serve society, Fintiri explained that the decision to organise a public lecture was aimed at encouraging meaningful discussions on democracy, leadership and the responsibilities of public office holders.

He therefore thanked the former Vice President for accepting the invitation to deliver the lecture and also announced plans to establish the Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri Foundation after leaving office to provide scholarships and other forms of support to vulnerable members of society.

Earlier, the chairman of the occasion and Taraba State Governor, Doctor Agbu Kefas, called on political leaders to protect democratic freedoms, respect citizens’ rights, and allow people to express their opinions without fear of intimidation.

Also the guest speaker of the event, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Ibrahim Jibrin and other speakers emphasised the need for effective communication between government and citizens to promote understanding of government policies, and enhance public participation in the development process.
