Young Engineers and Engineering Graduands have been advised to be critical in thinking towards proferring solutions to disasters and ensure sustainability in projects execution and management in the country.
The Deputy Dean Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU Bauchi Professor Yau Haruna gave the advice at the 2nd induction of Graduate members of the Faculty into the Nigerian Society of Engineers NSE held at Yelwa Campus Bauchi.
In a Paper titled the Role of Professional Engineers to Nation building, Professor Yau Haruna said engineering play leading role in disaster management, assessing damages caused by calamities and restoration of damaged infrastructure, hence the need for the inductees to provide solution to disasters like the flooding in Borno State.
“Engineers are known for their versatility in thinking and proferring solutions as well as ensure sustainability in every project they embark, and this is the time for that whe the country is faced with various forms of disaster with Borno flooding presenting a valid example, you must be proactive in bringing out solution to problems and don’t wait for government work or white collar jobs, be creative”, Engr Yau advises.
He stressed the need for them to be creative so as to become employers of labour instead of waiting for government or white collar jobs which are no longer available.
The Acting Vice Chancellor ATBU Professor Sani Usman Kunya represented by the Dean of Students’ Affairs Engineer Professor Sa’id Yusuf Umar who said engineers are problems solvers, urged the inductees to work towards making the country better and shy away from corrupt tendencies.
“I want to use this medium to congratulate the Inductees for this feat and I am optimistic that the University will reclaim its spot as the leading institution producing the best engineers in the country. There are opportunities out there, go and make impact, don’t be reluctant in taking advantage of available opportunities”, Kunya charges.
Administering the Induction Oath, the Chairman NSE Bauchi Engineer Abdulkarim Hassan represented the Vice Chairman Shehu Wakili said ATBU was the first institution to adopt the induction training of graduands being the first step in membership of the society followed by Corporate membership which comes four years after graduation.
Earlier, the Dean Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology ATBU Professor Dodo Ibrahim Sulaiman acknowledged the hardwork and resilience of the inductees, urging them to remain good ambassadors of the university wherever they find themselves.
In their separate remarks, the Valedictorian S Sulaiman and Chairman Organising Committee Abubakar Abdullahi who thanked the management and lecturers for providing conducive atmosphere for learning, pledged to uphold the ethics of the profession in service to humanity.
Out of the 591 inducted graduands, Engineer Sulaiman Sani Sulen-Jebu of the department of Electrical Engineering emerged over best graduating student with First class and an accumulated 4.7 CGPA.
