Taraba state Governor Agbu Kefas has inaugurated a seven-man advisory committee on local government autonomy in the state.
This is with a view to ensure full compliance with the recent Supreme Court judgement that granted financial autonomy to local government areas in the country.
The inauguration which took place at the Government House Chambers Jalingo, had top government functionaries in attendance.
The Taraba state Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas said the Supreme Court’s judgement aligns with his administration’s commitment to the decentralisation and emancipation of local government system in the state.
He described the inauguration of the committee as a major landmark event geared towards a more democratic, accountable, and effective governance structure in Taraba state.
Terms of reference of the advisory committee according to Governor Kefas include: implementation oversight, security coordination, financial autonomy, community engagement evaluation, and feedback, among others.
Governor Agbu kefas, therefore, charged members of the committee and other stakeholders in the state to be devoted to service for a developed and prosperous Taraba.
Responding, Chairman of the Advisory Committee who doubles as Chairman Taraba state House Committee on local government, Traditions and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abel Peter Diah, decribed the Supreme Court judgment as victory for democracy pledging that the committee will within the confines of Nigeria’s Constitution dispense its duties accordingly.
Those inaugurated include: Chairman House committee on Local Government, Traditions and Cheiftancy Affairs, Abel Diah as chairman, with Secretary to the Government of Taraba state Barrister Goben Timothy Kataps, Attorney General and commissioner for Justice, Barrister Yakubu Maikasuwa as members.
Other members include: Taraba state ALGON Chairman, Alhaji Hassan Aminu, Director, inspectorate Bureau for Chieftains Affairs, Lilian Jonathan, Mr. Bala Hussein, while Mr. Ezekiel Polycarp will serve as secretary.
