One of the victims, Mubarak Abdullahi who was wounded on arm as a result of the shooting said the police officers seized their phones, insisting they bail the phones, which they refused and that was what led to the shooting that left him with a broken arm.

Responding on the incident, the secretary of National Association of rogue scavengers (baban bola) , Babangida said the police men used to extort them whenever they visited their place of business during the day time.

Babangida said this situation is quite different because the police men came at night which triggered an argument which led to the shooting.

While confirming the incident, the acting PPRO, Taraba state command, DSP Kwache Gambo said the scavengers were preventing the security personnel from doing their work, that was what led to the incident.
