As the world joins to celebrate International Women’s Day, women in Adamawa State have been called upon to unite and throw their weight behind the proposed Special Seats Bill to boost female representation in politics.
The Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Adamawa State Chapter, Felicia Amos Dauda, made the appeal during an interview with Radio Nigeria in Yola.
Mrs. Dauda emphasized that women are indispensable in leadership roles and stressed that meaningful progress can only be achieved if women set aside their differences and support one another.
The NAWOJ boss also highlighted the systemic challenges that continue to hinder women’s political aspirations.
She called for deliberate government intervention and support to create an enabling environment that encourages more women to participate in governance.
Looking ahead to the 2027 governorship election, Mrs. Dauda declared that the time has come for a woman to take the reins of power in the state.
She lamented that long-standing discrimination has instilled fear in many women, preventing them from fully expressing their political ambitions.
Echoing the call for empowerment, some women in the state shared their perspectives on the significance of the day.
Mrs. Lami Joshua and Mrs. Cassandra Dauda described International Women’s Day as a pivotal moment to promote rights and justice for all women.
They stressed the importance of awareness, stating that every woman and girl must know her rights and be prepared to defend herself in all spheres of life.
This year’s International Women’s Day is themed Give to Gain.
