The Adamawa State Government has directed all 21 local government councils to provide designated refuse dump sites as part of measures to improve waste management and reduce flood risks across the state.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mohammed Sadiq, gave the directive during the June monthly sanitation exercise.
He said the state government, in collaboration with development partners, is working to ensure a clean and healthy environment for residents.
According to the commissioner, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri directed all local government councils to establish designated refuse dump sites to curb indiscriminate waste disposal.
Mohammed Sadiq noted that Adamawa is among the states likely to experience flooding this year, and explained that the monthly sanitation exercise is a key strategy for mitigating flood risks.
The commissioner added that the state government has intensified public sensitisation, particularly for residents in flood-prone communities, urging them to relocate to safer areas to protect lives and property.
He also encouraged residents to make environmental sanitation a regular habit to prevent disease outbreaks.
Chairman of Yola South Local Government Area, Salihu Usman Malkohi expressed satisfaction with the evacuation of refuse dumps, noting that the exercise would help reduce disease outbreaks in the area.
Malkohi applauded Governor Fintiri for initiatives aimed at protecting public health and assured that the council would comply with the directive to establish designated refuse dump sites.
The sanitation exercise featured the evacuation of refuse dumps at Doubeli Bypass and Wuro Hausa.
Across areas visited, there was a high level of compliance, with shops remaining closed while residents cleaned their surroundings.
