North-East Development Commission NEDC has reaffirmed its commitment to improving transportation, creating jobs and promoting environmentally friendly mobility across the region.

The Adamawa State Coordinator of the Commission, Khalifa Lawan, disclosed this at a stakeholder engagement in Yola-Adamawa State.

Lawan said the Commission planned to deploy 10,000 electric tricycles, 300 electric taxis and 30 electric buses across the North-East, with Adamawa expected to receive more than 1,000 tricycles, alongside taxis and buses.

He said the initiative would reduce transportation costs, create business opportunities and improve access to affordable transport.

The NEDC Adamawa State Coordinator added that the Commission planned to establish at least two or three charging stations in each state to support the project.

The Adamawa State Commissioner for Transport, Wunfe Anthony, stressed the need to provide adequate charging infrastructure before deploying the vehicles, citing the state’s unreliable electricity supply.

A facilitator, Emmanuel Wapah, said electric vehicles could reduce noise and exhaust emissions, adding that the vehicles could cover up to 300 kilometres on a full charge under specified conditions.

Wapah urged beneficiaries to maintain the vehicles properly and avoid completely depleting the batteries before recharging.

The workshop attracted transport unions, drivers, mechanics, security agencies and other stakeholders, who sought clarification on the program’s implementation.
