The Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar, has led a team of experts from a Dairy company to Taraba State to partner with the government on establishing Nigeria’s first Centre of Excellence for livestock and dairy development.
Speaking during the meeting with Governor Agbu Kefas in Jalingo, the Minister described Taraba as a natural hub for livestock production, adding that the visit also aims to introduce modern dairy farming practices into the state.
Alhaji Mukhtar said plans were underway to build a sustainable livestock and dairy value chain, noting that the Mambila Plateau in Taraba state offers one of the best environments in the country for high-quality cattle breeding.
He emphasised the need for capacity building, with proposals for a specialised training institute where people can gain first-hand experience in livestock rearing and dairy business management.
The minister maintained that the planned Center of Excellence is expected to meet global standards and position Nigeria as a key player in livestock development.
In a remark, Governor Agbu Kefas thanked President Bola Tinubu for considering Taraba for the initiative, noting that the state is well-positioned to drive livestock development in Nigeria.
He reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to support the project and also commended security agencies for sustaining peace, stressing that meaningful development can only take place in a stable environment.
A dairy expert, Gavel Don, presented practical steps on how dairy production can significantly boost revenue for both the state and the nation.
