The Management of Government Girls College GGC Bauchi has appealed to the State Ministry of Education to employ a Coach as well as rehabilitate and upgrade its Sporting facilities especially basketball Court to enable the students compete and win acholades in future competitions.
The Games Mistress GGC Bauchi, Mrs Mary Jika made the appeal during the presentation of trophies and award money won by the Basketball team of the school at the just concluded 2026 Nestle Milo Basketball Championship in Kano to the State Commissioner of Education at the ministry’s headquarters in Bauchi.
Mrs Mary Jika said the basketball court is not conducive for practice and training, while the coach training the students was sourced from the Sports council, hence the need for the government to come to their aid to enable them to excel in all aspects of sports.
Earlier, the Principal of GGC Bauchi Hajiya Hadiza Ibrahim, appreciated the Commissioner and entire management of the ministry for the series of interventions to the school since assuming office to include repairs of stolen glaziers at the domitory, rehabilitation of parts of the perimeter fence, electricity restoration among others.
Hajiya Hadiza Ibrahim listed some of the successes recorded since she took charge in 2022 to include second position in 2024 and 1st in 2025 President’s Inter-School Debate Nigeria, second in Cap making and third in tie-and-dye Inter-schools competition, fabrication of wind turbine fan by the students, overall best in 2024 arts and culture competition among numerous to mention.
Responding, the State Commissioner of Education Alhaji Abdulkadir Ibrahim who acknowledged the role of Unity Colleges in promoting unity, togetherness and tolerance, called on the students to embrace discipline and obedience to constituted authorities to become better leaders in the future.
Alhaji Abdulkadir Ibrahim said educational delivery remains the topmost priority of Governor Bala Mohammed led administration, noting that the ministry will continue to provide funds to address the immediate needs of schools to guarantee improved learning outcomes.
In their separate remarks, the Coach of both Male and Female Basketball Teams Theresa Samuel as well as the Captains of both teams Evan Chukwu Ebuka and Perpetual Akata thanked the state government fir giving them the opportunity to display their talents to the world.
Speaking to Radio Nigeria, the Deputy Director Sports in the ministry Bala Maijama’a said the competition organised among the ten Savannah states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara, saw the state clinch second position in basketball female category and sixth in male category, third in cultural display and a two hundred and fifty thousand naira price money.
