The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, N-HYPPADEC, has urged member states to take preventive measures of the impending flood predicted by Nimet.
The Head of Press and Public Affairs of the Commission Nura Tanko Wakili stated this during an advocacy visit to Dadin Kowa Community in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area Of Gombe State.
Gombe State is home to several hydroelectric power projects, including the Dadinkowa Dam and Hydroelectric Power Station.
The communities affected by the hydroelectric power projects in Gombe State have faced various socio-economic challenges, such as loss of farmland, disruption of fishing activities, and a decline in agricultural productivity.
He said these projects have had significant impacts on the local communities in terms of displacement, environmental degradation, and disruption of livelihoods.
Speaking on the challenges being faced by member states, the Head of Press and Public Affairs, said the Commission has undertaken several intervention programs which include infrastructural development, Livelihood support, Environmental Restoration, Social welfare and Community Development, and Disaster Risk Reduction.
Nura Tanko Wakili said HYPADEC’s aim is to extend the commission’s mandate to address the unique challenges faced by the communities in the state and provide them with the necessary support and resources to mitigate the negative impacts of hydroelectric power projects.
In his remark the Emir of Yamaltu, Alhaji Abubakar ALIYU expressed appreciation on the visit of HYPPADEC and urged for the quick implementation of the said mandates of the Commission.
