Modibo Adama University Teaching Hospital has discharged a set of conjoined twins following a successful separation surgery.
The twins, Hassan and Hussain, were joined at the abdomen, sharing a liver and other tissues.
Speaking during the discharge ceremony held at the hospital premises, the Chief Medical Director, Adamu Bakari Girei said the surgery, which is the sixth case handled by the facility, was successfully carried out with all required specialists domiciled in the hospital.
He appreciated the parents, the surgical team, and the community for their support towards the success of the procedure.
Lead Surgeon, Auwal Mohammed Abubakar, disclosed that the surgery and post-operative care were carried out free of charge, appreciating the hospital management for waiving all fees.
He also called on government to prioritize healthcare through improved training, welfare and infrastructure in order to curb brain drain.
Chairman of the occasion, HRH, Ptil Madagali, Dr. Aliyu Danburam described the separation of conjoined twins as a delicate and highly demanding medical procedure in paediatric surgery.
He commended the dedication and resilience of the surgical team, adding that such a feat, accomplished in the hospital, has positioned Yola as a hub for medical tourism.
Hassan and Hussain, who are now six months old, are from Bali in Taraba State.
Their mother had died during childbirth.
Their grandfather, Jibir Adamu, expressed deep gratitude to the hospital management for the successful separation of the twins.
He narrated how, despite lacking the resources, he made his way to Adamawa State in search of help and found support at the hospital.
The twins were subsequently certified healthy and discharged after months of medical care.
