The National Emergency Management Agency NEMA has launched the 2026 National preparedness and response campaign on floods in Adamawa state.
The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, Zubaida Umar stated this during a courtesy call on Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri at the government house yola, pointing out that Adamawa state was specifically chosen because it is one of the high risk areas in the country.
The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Zubaida Umar said the campaign was designed to drive early coordinated action plans to protect lives and livelihoods during the 2026 rainy season.
Umar noted that the theme “Srengthening Disaster Risk Governance for a Resilent Nigeria,” underscores the need for stronger institutions and proactive collaboration across all levels.
According to her, NEMA received predictions from NiMet and NIHSA that about thirty three states were at high risk of flooding and Adamawa state is one of them.
“The National Emergency Management Agency is visiting all the states of the Federation to sensitize the public as to what is expected and also to advise what needs to be done”.
Umar said in response to the predictions, NEMA convened an expert review meeting in April to assess the implications of the forecast and developed 2026 climate related risk management, preparedness and mitigation framework which would serve as a guide in reducing full impact nationwide.
“The key mitigation strategies include capacity building for local responders, simulation and table top exercises, strict adherence to rainfall and flood advisories , development and testing communities evacuation plans”.
The Director General therefore appreciated the Adamawa state government for being proactive by planning evacuation of the people when flood happens.
In a remark, Adamawa state governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri assured state government’s readiness to adhere strictly to all the measures outlined in order to reduce the risk as Adamawa is among states that suffered enormous loss due to flooding last year.
” This year we’ll be more proactive to ensure even before your coming we put in a lot of measures that will mitigate against the reoccurrence of what we experienced last year”
Fintiri explained that the state has introduced monthly sanitation and constructed storm water drainages across the state to ensure that all water ways are dissilted in order to have a free flow of water.
The governor who revealed that the state government is planning to build makeshift camps for displaced persons instead of closing schools, noted that the state government through the Ministry of Agriculture, will procure early maturing seedlings and distribute to farmers in the state for early harvest.

Governor Fintiri further appealed for special funding from the Federal Government to support affected states, describing the situation as a predicted natural disaster.
