The National emergency management agency, NEMA has commended the Adamawa state governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for directing security agencies in the state to stop the looting and vandalization of NEMA ware houses.
The Director General of NEMA, Mustapha Habib Ahmed gave the commendation when he visited the governor at the government house, yola.
The director general of NEMA, Mustapha Habib Ahmed who was represented by the director special duties, Fatima Kasim said he was at the governor’s office to commiserate with him on the breach of peace by hoodlums which resulted in vandalizing and looting of NEMA warehouses and some offices as well as business offices in yola, the state capital.
Mustapha Habib thanked and appreciated the governor and his deputy for swiftly directing security agencies to bring the situation under control as well as recovering some of the looted items.
The director general said part of NEMA’s mandate is to distribute relief materials to those affected by both natural and man made disasters and that is why the agency stockpiled the relief items in order to provide succor to persons affected by disasters.
While reassuring the relationship between NEMA and the Adamawa state emergency management Agency has been cordial and will remain cordial, the director general advised the state government to consider a durable solution to the problem by providing safer warehouses for NEMA in Yola operations office.
The Agency called for more support for the Adamawa state emergency management Agency, ADSEMA to enable it discharge its statutory responsibilities, with a call to also strengthen disaster management at the community level through establishing vibrant local emergency management committees in each local government area, which will help in providing proactive approach to disaster risk reduction.
He added that since those committees are closer to the people they will also be effective for life saving early actions should the need arise.
Responding, the Adamawa state governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who was represented by his chief of staff, Doctor Edgar Amos thanked NEMA for the visit and commended the agency for its commitment to attending to emergency situations throughout the country.
The governor also said the attacks on the ware houses in the state capital were planned and the youths might have been misguided as well.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri thanked the Agency for the condolences, saying that the state government appreciates the partnership between ADSEMA and NEMA and pledged to sustain the relationship for the development of the state.
