Gombe State Ministry of works, housing and transport says it is doing everything within the context of law to maintain building standard and ensure long term structures in the state.
The state commissioner for works, housing and transport Engineer Usman Maijamaa Kallamu gave the indication at an annual meeting and induction of new members as well as public lecture on incessant building collapse in the country, organised by the state chapter of the Nigeria Society of Engineers NSE.
Represented by Engineer Danladi Mela Kabillis, the commissioner said, his ministry is working tirelessly to ensure that contractors adhere strictly to building standards of ethics.
The commissioner pointed out that the steering committee under the chairmanship of the state Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, remains committed towards ensuring all building rules and regulations are followed.
Also speaking the National President of Nigeria Society of Engineers, NSE, Dr Magret Aina, stressed the need for engineers to ensure that the law governing the construction of any structure are maintained to avoid lost of lives and property in the society.
Represented by Engineer Hamman Dikko, she expressed satisfaction within both national and Gombe state leadership of the society and advised them to develop the habit of monitoring as well as supervision of all projects taking place across the state to ensure strict compliance of building standard.
On his part, the guest lecturer from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi Engineer Usman Abubakar, who spoke on incessant building collapse in Nigeria said the rampant collapse of buildings mostly occurred at densely populated areas such as Lagos, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, and Abuja due frequent constructions taking place and use of substandard building materials.
In a welcome address the outgoing Gombe state chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engineer Hamzat Abubakar appreciated the members for giving him the opportunity to serve in that capacity and appealed to them to extend same to the incoming executives.
Highlight of the event was presentation of awards of excellence to some members in various fields of engineering, among the beneficiaries include Engineer Hafsat Sulaiman Jalo from federal polytechnic Kaltungo.
