The Adamawa State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has appealed to primary school teachers in the state to remain calm, following plans for a protest that have circulated on social media. The union disclosed that the executive summary of the variation order for teachers due for promotion and upgrade is now before Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for implementation.
Addressing newsmen in Yola, the state NUT Chairman, Comrade Faisal Mohammed, assured that the union’s leadership is actively engaging with the government, critical stakeholders, the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), and the Ministry for Local Government Affairs to ensure the smooth implementation of the exercise.
Comrade Mohammed explained that the committee responsible for the exercise successfully raised the variation order for teachers due for promotion and upgrading in December 2025. He cited disparities across local government areas, noting that Demsa Local Government Area, with 651 teachers, has a salary difference of about ₦56 million, while Toungo Local Government Area, with 262 teachers, has a salary difference of about ₦8 million.
According to the chairman, the variation amount differs from one local government to another. He emphasized that the promotion exercise is linked to the recent verification of teachers, local government staff, and pensioners, and the union is currently awaiting the report of that exercise.
He further noted that following the centralization of the payroll system, the promotion process will proceed—a task that had been pending for nearly 20 years until now, when financial backing is being pursued.
Highlighting his personal commitment to the cause, Comrade Mohammed cited Yola-South Local Government Area, which has 2,000 teachers, out of which 1,399 are due for promotion. He disclosed that Adamawa State has about 24,000 primary school teachers in total.
The NUT chairman urged teachers to shelve any planned protest, assuring them that the union will continue to push for the timely implementation of the variation order.
