In a statement by Special Adviser on Media and Communication to Senator Shehu Buba Umar, Comrade Sabo Mohammed said, the lawmaker has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared his membership of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).

The statement says the senator announced his decision on Sunday, May 24, 2026, citing the absence of internal democracy, lack of fairness, marginalization of genuine party members, and increasing disregard for the opinions and aspirations of grassroots supporters within the APC.

Speaking shortly after his declaration, Senator Shehu Buba Umar explained that his decision came after extensive consultations with political associates, youths, women groups, party stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South Senatorial District and Bauchi State at large.

According to him, the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) remains a political platform built on the principles of justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership, with strong commitment to the democratic values enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The senator stated that his movement to the PRP is aimed at strengthening democratic governance, protecting the interests of the common people, and providing effective and responsive representation for the citizens of Bauchi State.

Senator Shehu Buba Umar further emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive where political parties allow fairness, equal opportunity, internal democracy, and active participation of members in decision-making processes.

He stressed that the time has come for patriotic leaders to unite and rescue the country from poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance.

“Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that truly listens to their concerns. Politics should be about service to humanity, justice, development, and improving the living conditions of the masses,” the senator stated.

He reaffirmed his commitment to championing policies and programmes that will directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens, especially in the areas of:

1. Youth empowerment and job creation

2. Quality education and scholarship opportunities

3. improved healthcare delivery

4. Agricultural development and food security

5. Economic growth and poverty reduction

6. Rural and urban infrastructural development

7. Women empowerment and social welfare

8. Security and community development

Senator Shehu Buba Umar also called on his supporters, political allies, and well-wishers to join him in the PRP in order to continue the collective struggle for good governance, social justice, accountability, and sustainable development across Bauchi State.

He assured the people of Bauchi State that his commitment to their progress, unity, and development remains unwavering, promising to continue providing purposeful leadership and effective representation at all levels.

Political Analyst believe the senator’s defection represents a major political development in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 general elections, with expectations that it could significantly reshape political alignments and strengthen opposition politics within the state and beyond.

The move is also seen as a growing sign of political realignment among key stakeholders seeking a more inclusive and people-centered democratic process in Nigeria.
