House of Representatives Committee on Navy has expressed dissatisfaction with the Nigerian Navy for acquiring foreign platforms without informing the parliament.

The Committee Chairman, Yusuf Gagdi, stated that the Navy failed to respond to their requests for documents needed for oversight.

Gagdi also criticized the Navy for the handling of the case involving Seaman Haruna Abbas, who was allegedly detained for an extended period without trial. Abbas’s dismissal after being held for six years sparked widespread condemnation.

The Committee’s visit was for oversight purposes, to ensure that taxpayer funds are properly utilized by the Navy.

They raised concerns about the acquisition of foreign platforms without their knowledge and the treatment of junior officers by senior officers.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, acknowledged the challenges faced by the Navy, including inadequate resources for operations.

He also highlighted the Navy’s role in policing the waterways, supporting the Nigeria Customs in deep-sea policing.
