National Assembly has advanced a bill to regulate the activities of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, SNB, which seeks to prohibit broadcasters without an SNB certificate from practicing.
The bill has successfully passed its second reading.
Interim Chairman of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, in Adamawa state, Mohammed Saidu, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the management of Radio Nigeria Fombina FM in Yola.
Saidu emphasized that the SNB, originally established in 1962 alongside the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, plays a crucial role in addressing challenges in the media industry, including the welfare of practitioners.
He stressed the need to revive the organization at both state and national levels to enhance professionalism in broadcasting.
As part of this effort, Saidu called for the support of media houses like Radio Nigeria Fombina FM to raise awareness among broadcasters about the importance of SNB certification.
He also encouraged practitioners to register online with a fee of five thousand naira.
In response, the General Manager of Radio Nigeria Fombina FM, Dahiru Garba Mohammed, while commending the SNB team for its initiative, highlighted the numerous benefits of SNB membership, citing examples of how registered broadcasters have gained recognition in the industry.
The General Manager further pledged to encourage professionals within and outside his station to register so as to uphold professionalism in the broadcast industry.
