Global warming, a persistent effect of climate change, occurs due to the trapping of heat radiated from the Earth by greenhouse gases.
These greenhouse gases, in their natural state, help maintain a temperature suitable for life, supporting both plants and animals.
As the world commemorates World Radio Day 2025, this year’s theme highlights the vital role of radio in raising awareness about climate change.
A Yola-based environmental expert, Dr Hasuruna Amos, describes the theme, Radio and Climate Change, as timely, emphasizing that radio can enhance coverage of one of the most pressing global challenges today.
However, he warns that human industrial and agricultural activities have significantly increased greenhouse gas emissions, intensifying the greenhouse effect and leading to a rise in global temperatures, commonly referred to as global warming.
The expert further explained that human activities such as burning fossil fuels, coal, and oil have resulted in high carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere.
Dr. Amos noted that climate change has negatively impacted food security in Nigeria, leading to conflicts over natural resources and threatening human security.
To address this crisis, he advocated the use of briquettes as an alternative cooking fuel, which could help mitigate climate change and reduce its harmful consequences.
The Environmental expert, Dr. Hasuruna Amos, also stressed the urgent need for legislative action, including large-scale tree planting and conservation efforts, while urging key stakeholders to promote eco-friendly alternatives like briquettes to curb activities that contribute to climate change.
