The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Gombe State Government have called for sustained investment in nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life as a lasting solution to child malnutrition, poor learning outcomes and low productivity.
Speaking at the launch of the Preventing Malnutrition in the First 1,000 Days project, UNICEF Chief of Field Office, Bauchi, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, said investing in mothers and young children today would produce healthier, better educated and more productive citizens in the future.
She noted that improving nutrition during pregnancy and early childhood would reduce child deaths, strengthen immunity and improve children’s ability to learn and contribute meaningfully to economic development.
Dr. Rafique urged governments, development partners, traditional and religious institutions and communities to prioritise nutrition through increased funding, stronger collaboration and sustained public awareness.
Also speaking, UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, Philomena Irene, said early nutrition interventions reduce healthcare costs, prevent lifelong health complications and help children reach their full potential.
The Gombe State Government reaffirmed its commitment to working with UNICEF and other partners to ensure that every child benefits from quality nutrition during the critical first 1,000 days of life, laying a strong foundation for healthier families and sustainable development.
