The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee has discharged and acquitted 55 awaiting-trial inmates, granted bail to 51 others and recorded about 69 convictions after reviewing their cases at the Yolde-Pate Maximum Correctional Facility.
The exercise was led by the Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, with representatives of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Correctional Service, pursuant to the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
The Yolde-Pate facility has a capacity of about 800 inmates.
The committee said the exercise was aimed at decongesting correctional facilities across the state and improving the health and welfare of inmates.
While discharging the inmates, Justice Abdulrahman charged them to become citizens of good behaviour by acquiring vocational and entrepreneurship skills and respecting constituted authorities.
Among the beneficiaries was a female inmate who gave birth while in detention. She was presented with postnatal delivery kits, and her baby girl was named Hafsat after the Chief Judge.

The jail delivery exercise will continue simultaneously across correctional facilities in Adamawa State as part of efforts to reduce overcrowding and promote better conditions for inmates.
