Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has flagged off the distribution of over two million insecticide-treated mosquito nets to over one million residents across the state.
The exercise, carried out in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and supported by development partners, was launched during the Integrated Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) and Insecticide-Treated Nets Campaign at Shagari Primary Health Care Centre in Adamawa State.
Governor Fintiri, represented by the Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, said the event marks another significant milestone in the collective effort to combat malaria, a disease that continues to pose a major public health challenge, particularly among children under five years of age and pregnant women.
According to the governor, malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa.
He noted that the Adamawa State Government recognizes the devastating impact of the disease on families and communities, hence its commitment to prioritizing effective and sustainable interventions.
He stated that the success of malaria control efforts depends largely on strong partnerships and commended implementing partners for their unwavering support and collaboration.
Governor Fintiri emphasized that the campaign is a collective responsibility and called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, community stakeholders, healthcare workers, and the media to support the initiative through mobilization and awareness creation.
Speaking at the ceremony, the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Chubado Jada and the Executive Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Suleiman Bashir, expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Health and development partners for supporting the initiative.
The integration of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention and Insecticide-Treated Nets would strengthen malaria prevention efforts, by protecting children during peak transmission periods and providing year-round household protection against mosquito bites.
