The Kano Peace Committee has called for political parties in Kano, Nigeria to promote peace and de-escalate tensions, especially during the upcoming gubernatorial election on March 18, 2023.
The Committee made the call on Thursday during a courtesy call visit to political actors in the state, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje ,and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso respectively.
The Committee expressed concern over recent actions and statements made by politicians in the state, which have caused apprehension among the people.
Speaking during the visit A.B Mahmoud SAN, who addressed the governor on behalf of the group said the call became pertinent in view of recent happenings in Kano especially during and immediately after the presidential and NASS Election
The group called on the state government to provide security and a level playing field for all parties, and urged political supporters to eschew violence for the progress of the state.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje appreciated the committee’s efforts and reiterated his commitment to ensuring peaceful elections.
On his part, head of secretariat Kano Peace Committee Comrade Ibrahim Waiya said, they meeting the Stakeholders in order to have a peaceful election.
He said they were also meeting the police and INEC to convey the messages of the Stakeholders in order to ensure justice for all.
The delegation also visited former Governor of the state and NNPP Presidential Candidate in the just concluded election Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and assured him of their resolved to ensure justice for all victims of political violence.
Responding, Kwankwaso appreciated the effort of the committee towards ensuring Peace,
He however lamented over attacks on their supporters, noting that justice is the foundation of peace.
Meanwhile the committee plans to use the one-week extension by INEC to advocate for peace and understanding among the parties and remind other stakeholders of their role in achieving peaceful elections.
