Mother Earth Day 2024: Environmental Advocates Lead Charge for Plastic Reduction

As the world celebrates Mother Earth Day, environmental advocates in Adamawa state have emphasized the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling plastics to address climate change.



They made the call while speaking to Fombina News in Yola.




Mother Earth Day is observed globally on April 22 to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote actions for the protection and preservation of the planet.




Julia Yusuf from Clearview Integrity Foundation underscored the significance of adopting the three Rs of waste management namely reducing, reusing, and recycling for a sustainable future.





Emphasizing this year’s theme, “Planet versus Plastic,” Yusuf highlighted the urgent need to curb plastic production and usage to prevent further environmental deterioration.





President of Nigerian Earth Warriors, Andrew Musa linked recent extreme weather events such as sandstorms, heat waves, and floods to climate change, calling for a shift in behaviour, including an end to practices like indiscriminate waste disposal.





He also recommended embracing alternative energy sources, provision of garbage trucks, reintroduction of routine sanitation exercise and promotion of tree planting initiatives for a greener environment.





Another environmentalist, Anas Peter while speaking on responsible waste management, called for attitudinal change to put an end to practices like careless dumping of refuse which which harm the environment and endanger human health.





He also stressed the role of both government and grassroots organizations in raising awareness about environmental preservation.



Mother Earth Day serves as an annual reminder of the importance of sustainable practices and the need to address challenges such as climate change, pollution, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity.
