National Population Commission, NPC, has commenced full digital birth and death registration across Adamawa State under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system.
The Federal Commissioner of the Commission , Clifford Zira who stated this during a Press Conference in Yola, said that the initiative would strengthen civil registration, improve the generation of vital statistics and provide reliable data for national development planning.
Zira, who announced this at a press briefing in his office, explained that the digital registration system became operational across the 21 Local Government Areas of Adamawa State on July 1, 2026.
He said the initiative builds on the launch of the E-CRVS system and the inauguration of the National Coordination Committee on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics by President Bola Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Administration.
The Federal Commissioner noted that civil registration goes beyond an administrative process, as it provides reliable statistics needed to guide public policy, resource allocation and national development planning.
According to Zira, Nigeria records an estimated five million births annually, but millions of births and deaths remain unregistered.
He said birth registration coverage currently stands at approximately 57 percent nationwide, while death registration remains below 20 percent.
To bridge the gap, the NPC has established 4,011 functional registration centres across the 774 Local Government Areas in the country, with plans to expand the number to about 8,000.
The Federal Commissioner reiterated the Commission’s commitment to strengthening civil registration and vital statistics as a key pillar of its seven-point agenda, particularly in digital transformation, database quality, stakeholder engagement, and improved service delivery.
In a remark, NPC State Director, Jummai Hassan, described the digital registration initiative as one of the most transformative reforms in the history of civil registration.
She said the initiative demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to using technology to improve service delivery, strengthen data integrity, and ensure that every birth and death in Adamawa State is accurately and securely documented.
Hassan, however, expressed concern over the low level of death registration in the state.
The NPC State Director, commended Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his support to the Commission and appreciated the 21 Local Government Council chairmen, development partners, healthcare institutions, religious and traditional leaders, civil society organisations, and the media for their collaboration in advancing civil registration in the state.
Highlight of the briefing was the presentation of a free birth certificate to Maryamu Naaga for her child, Felix Kayla Nyagada, to demonstrate the Commission’s readiness to ensure an effective and efficient database for national development planning.
