The Vice Chancellor University of Maiduguri Professor Aliyu Shugaba has inaugurated the Steering and nine other sub-committees for the proposed twenty fourth combined convocation of the institution.
The Convocation is coming at a time when gradual peace has been restored to Borno state after more than thirteen years of Boko Haram insurgency.
Inaugurating the Committees, Professor Shugaba said the Covid-19 pandemic and prolonged strike of Academic Staff Union have made it difficult for the University to hold another Convocation Ceremony since 2018.
He announced that during the combined ceremony, outstanding graduands of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 as well as 2020/2021 will be presented for the awards of various degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University.
“The University of Maiduguri has over the years held its Convocation ceremonies quite regularly before the security challenges in the North East region. It is gratifying to note that despite those security challenges, the University had successfully held the 23rd Combined Convocation ceremony in 2018” Professor Shugaba said.
The Vice Chancellor remarked that the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Services Professor Saidu Baba will coordinate activities for the Ceremony.
Responding, Chairman of the Steering Committee Professor Sa’idu Baba assured that despite the economic downtown, the Committees will work assiduously to ensure smooth conduct of the Ceremony.
He charged chairmen and members of the sub-committees to commence work immediately to meet the date.
Correspondent Dauda Iliya reports that the sub-committees included that of Convocation lecture; contact and fund raising, information, publicity and fundraising as well as medical and emergency services.
