North East Development Commission, NEDC, has distributed food items to associations in Adamawa State as part of efforts to alleviate economic hardship and support vulnerable groups in conflict-affected communities.
The Adamawa State Coordinator of the Commission, Khalifa Lawal, during the distribution exercise held in Yola, said the distribution was intended to cushion the effects of the economic hardship being experienced across society, particularly among vulnerable groups.
He explained that the Commission selected 150 organizations for the first phase of the exercise, with a target of reaching 1,000 associations in the overall programme.
Lawal further stated that the associations were selected based on established criteria and urged them to ensure transparency in distributing the items to their members.
The NEDC Adamawa State Coordinator expressed optimism that the intervention would positively impact lives at the grassroots.
On his part, Head of Resettlement and Early Recovery, Lawal Hamidu said the distribution of food items was part of the Commission’s mandate to support vulnerable people and promote development, peace, and prosperity, particularly in conflict-affected communities.
Hamidu called on well-meaning individuals to emulate the gesture by assisting the needy and less privileged in their communities.
Some beneficiaries, including Victor Saje of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN and Ismaila Modibbo of the Muslim Council, commended the NEDC for the intervention and pledged to ensure the items are judiciously distributed to the intended beneficiaries.
Other associations beneficiaries include the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Madagali/Gwoza Internally Displaced Persons, Women Pensioners, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Correspondents’ Chapel, and NAWOJ, among others.
A total of 3,000 items, comprising bags of rice, cartons of spaghetti, and cooking oil were distributed.
